Matthew Slows Her Down, But “The Girl on the Train” Still Wins The Weekend

High winds took a bite out of the weekend, Hurricane Matthew knocking nearly 10% off the weekend’s box office totals, compared to last year. But The Girl on the Train was the engine that could, topping the weekend grosses handily.

Here were the predictions from Friday:

1. The Girl on the Train – $26 million
2. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – $14 million
3. Middle School – $10 million
4. Deepwater Horizon – $9 million
5. The Birth of a Nation – $7 million

And here’s how the results tallied up:

1. The Girl on the Train – $25 million
2. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – $15 million
3. Deepwater Horizon – $12 million
4. The Magnificent Seven – $9 million
5. Storks – $8.5 million

So it was a good weekend for movies that’ve been hanging around awhile. The Birth of a Nation did bring in $7 million, but Storks flew past it to take the fifth spot. Middle School was held back, too, coming in just shy of $7 million. Kudos to Deepwater Horizon, for a strong second weekend showing. Turns out the election isn’t the only good disaster still playing.
